MOVED IN LIGHT

In Collaboration with Hana van der Kolk & Tuce Yasak

Performance/Installation (2017)

Moved in Light is a performative installation that examines objects and their properties in relationship to queer identities and the production of utopian queer space.

This performative installation investigates "queer" objects, specifically abandoned/unwanted objects found in an abandoned factory in Troy, NY. These “borrowed” objects are in dialogue with queer identities that have "failed" to be a part of the reproduction process. In the field of queer studies, there is a long history of discussing "queer failure," as it can be a productive means of critiquing capitalism and heteronormativity.

Moved in Light also draws inspiration from Sara Ahmed's Queer Phenomenology, particularly her concepts of orientation and dis/orientation. Our intention is to produce an audiovisual space that incorporates the concept of dis/orientation using Ambisonics 360˚ audio techniques, and video editing tools to examine “what do such moments of disorientation tell us? What do they do, and what can we do with them?”

This piece is a collaborative project with movement artist Hana van der Kolk, light artist Tuce Yasak, and audiovisual artist Senem Pirler, and was performed at Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) in May 2017.
